Campus Charité Mitte, North Entrance and Research Building in Berlin

In a narrow gap between Friedrich-Busch-Haus and the east wing of the Department of Radiation Oncology, a new research building with public uses on the ground floor is envisaged as an entrance to the Charité campus. Our design calls for the insertion of an independent form that takes up a prominent position on Invalidenstraße, expansively opening up inward while subtly opening outward. The typologically clear, emblematic form of the building derives from the urban fabric.

With its hourglass-like tapered waistline, the building reveals the side facades of its neighbors. On the side adjoining the oncology department, the plan is K-shaped, thus reducing the new building’s depth in half and forming a well-lit outdoor space. The same principle, in attenuated form as a glazed atrium space, is applied to the side adjoining Friedrich-Busch-Haus. The soffit of the public passageway, a sculpturally staged spatial setting, draws reference to the roof geometry and fuses it with the plan geometry to create a legible building form. The ground floor is reduced to a minimum and rests upon a mere four points that incorporate staircases and necessary infrastructure. Spanning in between is a café with exhibition areas that serves as an interface between the general public and the campus. The use of brick as the predominant material establishes a clear link to the historical buildings of the Charité. Perforated portions of the end walls open up abstract views into the research and office spaces on the upper floors.
