Educational Campus HES-SO Valais-Wallis, PH-VS und Stiftung HF Gesundheit

Our first-prize-winning entry to the competition combines three educational institutions on one site in Brig-Glis, in the Swiss canton of Valais, and bundles them with related fields. In this way, the educational campus becomes a place that yields many spatial synergies and facilitates, among other things, high-caliber education in the care professions. The proximity to the neighboring hospital further enriches the learning conditions. The compact, multistory building not only has a strong, identifiable presence on the street, but also forms the western terminus of the new hospital terrace.

Inside, where the central atrium connects all levels, the open space extends in different directions as two-story units that function as communication zones. The result is a compact, efficiently organized building with an abundance of daylight. The load-bearing structure is designed as a hybrid timber structure and follows a uniform basic principle. The internal load-bearing structure, a skeletal frame with wood infill, is continued on the exterior as a visible facade.

The campus adheres rigorously to a low-tech concept, limiting the technical aspects to the bare minimum and prioritizing natural and passive measures. The basic premises of the energy concept are good use of daylight, natural ventilation with cross ventilation and night cooling, limited mechanical ventilation, maximum use of passive thermal storage mass, and external shading devices. The building services are centralized in the basement.
