Reorganization and Expansion of School Campus in Verden

The school campus in the city of Verden on the river Aller in Lower Saxony is located southeast of the city center, in a residential area adjacent to an attractive municipal park. The goal was to manifest the new pedagogical concept in a new spatial concept – with open learning landscapes instead of closed class groups. Our competition design, developed in collaboration with WES LandschaftsArchitektur and awarded first prize, preserves the character of the existing building. The open space concept integrates the park as an essential part of the overall urban structure.

»Open shelving« structures are appended to the existing buildings, and together they form the learning landscape and its associated spaces, thus using additions to transform an outdated school building type into a learning landscape that is ready for whatever the future brings. This architectural concept is applied to the two main longitudinal blocks and similarly to the buildings to the north and south. The auditorium, cafeteria, and lobby form a generous spatial continuum that can be used as one contiguous area or divided into sections. The open areas of the learning landscapes are divided into various zones for presentation, communication, quiet work, and research, but they can also be used flexibly. The existing facades remain largely unchanged in design, although they will be upgraded to improve energy efficiency and the colors will be reduced. The additions, on the other hand, are timber-framed, open and flexible spatial structures that contrast with the existing and convey the character of the interior spaces to the exterior. The entire campus unfolds like a natural, atmospheric park. Functional areas, such as the northern »amphitheater« with a view of the city and a stage, or the romantic lake with a children’s water play area, are unobtrusively integrated. The curving main paths, running east to west and north to south, emphasize the gentle topography and connect the surrounding residential areas in an unpretentious way.
