Ingeborg Herrmann School in Pforzheim

The new middle school building will be built southwest of the city center of Pforzheim on a sloping site that descends from the north. The original building ensemble from 1968 – consisting of administrative offices, a large auditorium for events, and a daycare center at the back – will be replaced by the new school building. The hornbeam trees in the courtyard, some of which are quite large, will be preserved as part of the construction project.

The proposed new school building is particularly notable for its innovative approach to interior design: a functionally organized block containing administrative offices and both standard and specialized classrooms is juxtaposed with a spacious »learning hall.« This hall, which incorporates open areas for communication and group work as well as teacher support areas and a media center, extends from the ground floor to the top floor. The generous atrium spaces and stairs, as well as the flexible ways they can be used, provide a vertical connection between all floors. Overall, the architectural concept is based on a duality of closed and open spaces, whose orientation varies to promote either concentration or communication among students.

The greening concept for the building is divided into two distinct sections: On the Pestalozzistraße side, the north, south, and west facades are greened with a system of climbing plants rooted in the ground. The balconies of the »learning hall« provide direct access to the outdoors. On the east side, the stepped form of the building provides a visual connection to the lower floors. The greenery on the facade, which really comes into its own in this area, establishes a relationship with the expansive green space of the schoolyard.
