Police Station in Rottenburg, ongoing

As a replacement for the existing station house, the new Rottenburg police station is being built on a vacant lot on the southern edge of town. The building is designed as a hybrid timber structure. Its massing consists of a cube-like base of reinforced concrete and a two-story wooden structure on top. Both of these different construction methods will be evident on the facade.

Visitors enter the police station through the north-facing main entrance on the ground floor. In addition to the public reception area, the ground floor contains offices and an adjoining courtyard to the east. The upper part of the building contains mainly offices. These upper floors are flush with the base on the south and west sides, creating a vertical accent that gives the police station a clear face.

The two construction methods are not only discernible from the outside. The contrasting surface textures of the load-bearing wood and concrete walls are also visible on the inside. The stair cores, for example, which are built of reinforced concrete over their full height, contrast with the otherwise purely wood construction of the upper floors. The facade proudly displays photovoltaic panels designed as awnings, installed at a slight angle on a bright and delicate substructure, giving the otherwise clearly structured building a certain lightness.
