Development Plan »Südlich Haroldstraße« in Düsseldorf

The site for development is located in the government district of the North Rhine–Westphalian state capital of Düsseldorf. The urban design competition aimed to clarify the synergy between expanded green space and two high-rise buildings atop mid-rise plinth buildings. The height was to be kept in accordance with the Düsseldorf skyline and not exceed a limit of about 100 meters.

Our design calls for two stepped-back towers that grow out of the base and converge at the approach to the bridge over the Rhine. The two structures, slated for use by ministries and the NRW Bank, stand in dialogue with each other as well as with other tall landmarks of Düsseldorf. With their elegant, vertical, and crystalline configuration, they fit into the silhouette of the urban skyline and are an enhancement to the site. They are positioned at maximum distance from the green corridor, which stretches out to incorporate the plinths and also embraces the terraced setbacks of the towers.

Thus our concept, which was awarded second prize, closes the gap in the government district, creates connections and transitions to the surrounding area, and establishes a green-space link from the city center to the banks of the Rhine.
