Geschwister Scholl High School in Stuttgart, Commendation

The Geschwister Scholl high school in Stuttgart’s Sillenbuch district is to be refurbished and expanded from four to five classes per grade level. Part of the school, including the assembly hall, is to be retained. We responded to the architectural task with a rooftop addition of lightweight wood construction and an extension on the east side to create a symmetrical shape. In our design, which was honored with a commendation, the existing building is preserved as much as possible, further developed as an organism, and transformed into a contemporary and sustainable school building.

The facade will be sheathed with a verdant timber framework and tiered outdoor terraces, creating a structure capable of providing a diversity of functions. In this way, the school building becomes interwoven with the school garden and schoolyard.

The school gets a spacious new entrance area that leads into the renovated assembly hall. It accommodates the new cafeteria, library, and an adjoining theater space, thus forming the new heart of the school. From here, stairs conceived to also be places for gathering lead to the upper floors. This creates an open, light, and communicative atmosphere. The layouts of the learning areas are reorganized: clusters, specialized classrooms, and individualized learning areas are grouped around the two atriums.
