Martin-Lerche-Haus, Institute of Food Safety, Berlin, ongoing

The new laboratory and classroom building on the Düppel campus of the Freie Universität Berlin creates a modern work environment by spatially consolidating the Department of Veterinary Medicine and improving cooperation with other university institutes. The single-story building engages in a dialogue with its surroundings, which are dominated by low, freestanding buildings with gabled roofs in the midst of open green spaces. It becomes a new, defining element of the campus, marking its architectural conclusion to the south.

The folded roof structure complies with the building regulations and establishes a rapport with the neighboring buildings. Two atriums bring daylight into the internal laboratory spaces and give structure to the new building. The peripheral corridor along the facade connects all the zones internally and enables the research and teaching spaces to be located on a single level – making all the core facilities easily and directly accessible from all functional areas.
The course room, designed specifically for teaching needs, and the demonstration hall are both located directly adjacent to the entrance lobby on the northeast corner of the building, facing the campus. The course room can be generously opened to the lobby when needed. The building is designed to achieve Gold certification under the Assessment System for Sustainable Building for Federal Buildings (BNB).
