Site Development and New District Office in Friedrichshafen

The architectural design competition for site development and construction of the new Lake Constance District Administrative Office was held to seek a modern and sustainable workplace concept that would make the district administration in Friedrichshafen fit for the future. Our design, which was awarded 1st prize, responds to the prominent location at the eastern entrance to the city with a porous and finely grained built fabric: building modules arranged in a lively manner and staggered in height are oriented in scale to the residential development and coalesce to form a coherent figure. This creates an antithetical dialogue with the existing high-rise building.

A block of eight modules describes the basic principle of assembled elements. The modules are shifted slightly in relation to one another, thereby reordering the exterior space. Projections and recesses allow the building and greenery to intermesh, thus creating open, manageable work areas in a transparent atmosphere. Landscaped inner courtyards, terraces, and roof areas with a view of the lake round off the amenities. Beams and interior columns are positioned so as to create ideal conditions for office depths and corridor zones in the interior spaces. On the ground floor is a central, cross-shaped lobby with the citizen services center. The upper floors accommodate the office areas, which are directly interconnected up to the fourth floor.

The load-bearing structure of modular wood construction ensures a high degree of flexibility that enables responses to future developments. The facades convey an external expression of the wooden structure and allow the building to correspond with its surroundings.
