German Leather Museum in Offenbach

Our competition design formulates a structural and programmatic reconception of the Deutsches Ledermuseum (German Leather Museum) in Offenbach. The renovation and extension of the cultural building offers the opportunity to create contemporary, future-oriented exhibition spaces and to strengthen contact with the public. Our design places a strong emphasis on the interior spatial sequence – arrival and encounter play a crucial role.

The sequence of spaces through which the visitor moves, from the entrance plaza to the extension, creates a unique spatial layering. A large part of the existing shell and core structure of the 1960s addition will be retained and integrated into the new extension. The layering begins in the spacious entrance plaza, where information is laid out step by step, setting the tone for visitors as they enter the museum. In collaboration with bäuerle landschaftsarchitektur + stadtplanung, a flowing transition between indoor and outdoor space is achieved. The distribution of functions also follows the principle of spatial layering. Inside the original building, some interventions are needed to ensure that it remains viable for use as a museum well into the future. On the ground floor, for example, the floor of the two side wings is lowered to the level of the existing main entrance so as to provide spacious and barrier-free access to the café, the museum education department, and the event hall. The reddish color of the extension’s folded and partially perforated copper facade echoes the coloring of the red sandstone that is prominent at the base of the original building. At the same time, copper is reminiscent of the color and appearance of leather, which also changes color over time, acquiring a patina without losing its beauty in the process.
