Main Fire Station in Trier, with Paramedic Services and Integrated Command, ongoing

In Trier, a main fire station with a paramedic services unit and integrated command center is to be built at a new site directly across from the Imperial Baths, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our design, which received 1st prize, creates an architectural figure that stands confidently beside the Roman architectural monuments without dominating the urban landscape or obstructing historical lines of sight. With recesses cut into the upper floors, the four-story building responds to the adjacent built fabric. The serene brick facade with perforated window bands picks up on the predominant historical material from the surroundings.

The layout was developed under the premise of minimizing distances and reducing response times. The main fire station and the paramedic services unit are designed as discrete functional units but are internally interconnected. All the functions needed for operations and deployment, including the vehicle bay, the workshops, and the main entrance are grouped together in the two-story base. This is set back and extensively glazed, thus helping to strengthen the public presence of this important civic building. On top of this, the communal quarters and quiet rooms are poised as three two-story blocks of hybrid wood construction. Roof terraces and green courtyards set into the building volume provide common areas of high quality and a central gathering place for the entire facility. The integrated command center will be a separate building in the form of another linear block on the southern part of the site.
