Turku, Finland’s oldest city, will celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2029. To mark the occasion, the city plans to open a new museum dedicated to the history and future of civilization. Our proposal, entitled ARCHI_PELAGO, was shortlisted from over 400 submissions and reached the final round.

The design positions the new building on a peninsula to the west of the city center. With its translucent facade, the new museum shimmers seductively on the water’s edge. Inside, the exhibition area is conceived as »buildings within a building«, arranged according to an open space concept within a sculptural wooden structure that, when seen from a distance, resembles driftwood piled up to form an archipelago. The organic outer shell and its polygonal surface evoke ease and lightness along with a naturalistic experience. As a new landmark that corresponds with and complements the city’s adjacent medieval castle, our design references both the past and the future. The jury specifically praised the museum’s well-chosen location and the concept of the building as a versatile event space that can become a new urban meeting place.
