Neufeld High School, 3rd prize

The school building ensemble from the 1960s, which is partially protected as a historic monument, is to be expanded in dialogic harmony with the existing architecture. The main building, which remains dominant, will be complemented by a »smaller brother« that resembles it structurally and spatially. Its outward appearance employs contemporary means – for sunshading, for example – but corresponds with the main building in its proportions and articulation. A special aspect of the design is the adoption of the structural shell of the existing ancillary building, which has been approved for demolition.

This reduces the amount of embodied energy compared to an entirely new building and thus makes an important contribution to sustainability. The existing steel structure will be retained, reinforced, and supplemented by a wood structure for the rest of the building. The existing »platform« connecting the two buildings has been kept and reorganized. In conjunction with this, the new building will receive another point of access from the lower-lying street level, similar to the main building. The internal circulation system consisting of a narrow atrium and stairways extending up the entire height of the building has also been adopted and developed further. The sports hall as well as technical equipment rooms and ancillary spaces are located beneath the »platform«, while a recess area flanked by both buildings covers it.
