Cadolzburg High School, District of Fürth, 2nd Prize

The site for the »New Cadolzburg High School« stretches along the edge of the residential area within a gently undulating agricultural landscape that slopes down to the woods to the north. The two-story school building is designed as a flat, terraced structure that follows the topography and, together with the gymnasium, sports field and green spaces, forms a landmark integrated into the landscape.

The sloping terrain allows the functions to be arranged in layers. The gymnasium is embedded into the slope and thus beneath the school building, which is laid out compactly and contiguously on just two floors. The upper level accommodates all eight age group clusters, which can be used variably as learning houses, learning lounges, or learning landscapes. All of the school’s main common areas, such as the auditorium and cafeteria, are located on the entrance level. Courtyards and recesses in the facades provide daylight to the interior spaces. The school’s two stories are designed as a hybrid timber structure and are modularly configured to ensure a high degree of flexibility.
The competition jury praised the design as an «iconographic and forward-thinking proposal that is highly commendable on a professional level for its consistency and resoluteness.«
