Extension and Modernisation of Regional Prison Altstätten (CH)

The regional prison in Altstätten is to be restructured due to the reorganisation of prisons in the canton of St.Gallen and the segregation regulations for different types of detention. The existing prison facility, which currently has 45 places, is to be expanded to 126 places, including the necessary infrastructure. The task of the single-stage project competition was to plan an operationally and economically optimised and architecturally convincing overall facility for the expansion and renovation of the regional prison while maintaining ongoing operations.

Our design »Hof und Höfe« design integrates itself into the landscape in a courtyard typology, emphasising the horizontality and spaciousness of the surroundings. In the overall volume, the individual residential groups are each arranged and organised as individual structures - separated by recessed empty spaces that provide light.

From the jury's verdict: »"Hof und Höfe" is a well-structured design that takes up a large part of the site with its two-storey layout, but enhances its spaciousness with internal tree-lined courtyards and recessed lighting spaces. The two-storey design facilitates operational processes. Above all, the living groups on the upper floor, each arranged around a central courtyard, support the intentions of group detention both in the penal system and in administrative detention with their good spatial qualities.«
