»Best of Best« – Presentation of the Iconic Awards 2024 in Munich

540 entries from 36 countries - this is our first time at the Iconic Awards presented by the German Design Council Foundation. We are somewhat proud that our Sports Center for Überlingen School Campus is one of the projects that not only received an award, but also the »Best of Best« label. The award ceremony took place on October 8 at BMW Welt in Munich. The high-quality catalog with all the award-winning entries was also published on this occasion. »wulf architekten have succeeded in giving a massive structure an extraordinary lightness,« emphasizes the jury. »The new building fort the Sports Center in Überlingen on Lake Constance is by no means forced to take a back seat. Its zigzag roof really stands out.» It was a pleasure!

»A center of lifelong learning« – north vocational school center opened

The renovated North vocational school center, the largest school construction project in Darmstadt, was opened on September 30 with many guests. Mayor Hanno Benz praised the project as an example of successful cooperation between all those involved. City Treasurer André Schellenberg praised keeping the complex refurbishment on time and within budget as a »very remarkable achievement«. Principal Gerald Hubacek emphasized that the renovated buildings were »far more than stone, glass and concrete«, as a »center of lifelong learning« had been created here. In his presentation, Tobias Wulf also referred to the new canteen and media center, which has been completed in 2021 and is also located on the grounds of the vocational school center. Being planned by wulf architekten together with Jetter Landschaftsarchitekten and wh-p Ingenieure it has already won several awards.

»Thought-out architecture« - police headquarters Rheinpfalz

Another milestone for the construction of the new police headquarters Rheinpfalz: Since the ground-breaking almost two years ago, a huge excavation pit with a massive base plate has been created in a central location in Ludwigshafen. On September 25 the foundation stone was laid with many prominent political figures in attendance.

»The new police headquarters in the middle of Ludwigshafen will not only create modern working conditions for around 650 police officers, but will also be visible and accessible to citizens,« emphasized mayor Jutta Steinruck. »This project strengthens the sense of security in our city and shows how well thought-out architecture can shape the cityscape.«

Success in the »competitionline Ranking special: Schools«

Educational buildings play a major role in our portfolio. The many competitions we have won are reflected in a second place in the »competitionline Ranking special: Schools«. A recognition and a great success for our competition teams. In the interview, Tobias Wulf emphasizes the social significance of innovative school construction: »The constant development of our society requires new educational concepts. As architects, we want to make a contribution to designing the right spaces for this.«

Valuable expertise for research project SolarEnvelopeCenter

We are part of the SolarEnvelopeCenter, a joint research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection that is paving the way for new ways of using photovoltaic systems on façades. Under the leadership of the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg, a consortium of research, industry, planning and construction companies is developing standardized solutions that simplify the planning and construction of building-integrated photovoltaic systems. wulf architekten is the only architectural firm inside the SolarEnvelopeCenter and, together with the construction consultancy Drees & Sommer, is responsible for the practicality of the standards developed.
With the UNIT IT and Computing Center at the University of Mannheim, the Faculty of Life Sciences in Reutlingen and the extension and renovation of the regional prison in Altstätten, wulf architekten is currently implementing several building projects that are exemplary in terms of the use of photovoltaics on the building envelope. The findings from these projects are being incorporated into the research project.

The SolarEnvelopeCenter was launched in January 2023 and will run until the end of 2025. In addition to wulf architekten, the consortium includes the German Society for Solar Energy DGS e.V., the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, Drees & Sommer and IBC Solar AG.

»Big steps for small municipalities« – Ingmar Menzer at the »circular building« symposium

The new fire station in Straubenhardt is one of the first buildings in Germany to be built according to the cradle-to-cradle principle and as such is a pioneering project. Under the heading »Big steps for small municipalities«, they will shed light on the special development process - from the idea to the political implementation to the structural realization. The conference is being organized by the LUBW Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Wuerttemberg, which is also publishing a new practical guide to circular building. The all-day event is free of charge and is recognized by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Chamber of Architects as further education and training. Registration is possible until October 8 at the latest.

Existing building transformed into a »Learning House«

We are happy to present a new project from our portfolio: The refurbished and extended middle school in Gerlingen has been popular with pupils and teachers since it opened and is an example of how to successfully deal with existing buildings.

At the request of the town of Gerlingen, the middle school built in the 1970s has been expanded to accommodate three classes per grade and adapted to current educational standards. The new construction, with its modern, specialized classrooms, is arranged in a ring around the existing building, transforming it into a »Learning House« with cluster areas and featuring an essential element of the pedagogical concept: flexible spaces that provide places for quiet or group work and can also be used by students to simply gather and hang out.

Iconic Awards 2024: Sports Center in Überlingen has been awarded »Best of Best«

The Sports Center in Überlingen has already won many prizes - with the Iconic Awards (established by the German Design Council) another important award has been added. Together with the landscape architects Planstatt Senner, we are delighted that we have received additionally the »Best of Best« label and have thus been recognized as an »outstanding submission« by the jury. With its façade made of white expanded metal, the sports center presents itself as an elegant solitaire. The sports center has an elegant appearance thanks to the freestanding building’s facade of white expanded metal. The distinctive folded roof, which grows out of the cube as a jagged wooden construction, gives structure to the built form and establishes ties to the neighboring, smaller-scale residential buildings.
